The release of the much anticipated The Runaways movie is almost here (April 9th!), and has left us with the urge to play around with the amazing retro makeup looks from the film. Joan Jett's famous smudged, smokey rocker eye is still as popular today as it was then, and Cherie Currie's iconic use of color and glitter is the ultimate in glam rock.
The looks were created by MUFE artist Robin Mathews, and MAKE
UP FOR EVER has posted tutorials for Stewart's and
Currie's movie looks on their website and
on their Facebook Page, so if you're like us, you can recreate it for yourself.
To get Stewart's "Joan Jett" smokey eye:
1. Apply
MAKE UP FOR EVER Eyeshadow
127, a metallic taupe, over the entire lid.
2. Using Aqua Eyes 04, apply a generous amount of the liner on the top and bottom lids, close to lashline. With a smudge brush, smoke out liner just enough to look slept in and imperfect. Then go back and reapply a heavier coat of eyeliner along the lash line
3. Apply Eyeshadow
139, a black brown shimmer, over the black liner and blend.
4. Curl lashes and apply Smoky Lash Mascara to top and bottom mashes, making sure to get the underside of top lashes to really blacken out the look.
How to get Fanning's "Cherie Currie" colorful smokey eye:
1.
Sweep Star
Powder 922, a pale copper, all over lid stopping short of the outer corner.
2. Line upper and lower lids with Aqua Eyes 3L, an navy blue shimmer, and smudge lightly with a smudge brush.
3. Apply Eyeshadow 87, a metallic navy blue, to the outer corner of the eye with a small flat brush, then drag the shadow into the crease slightly. Blend with the same brush, and swipe the same shadow color onto the lower lash line, blending it out to create a smoky effect.
4. Curl your lashes and apply Smoky Lash.

A few more awesome tips? Mathews said she had Stewart sleep in the liner, applied the night before, to capture Jett when she was in the depths of the "wear and tear" of hard living. She also duplicated Jett and Currie's original blush technique: hold a piece of paper against your cheek before applying blush to get a hard line, like in the picture above. We're totally trying that when we're in the mood for a funky, rocker look.

While the product is meant to be used both under foundation and as a touch up throughout the day, we find the best trick is to apply makeup normally, squeeze a small amount onto fingertips, and gently pat onto problem areas OVER makeup. Those of us without oily skin still love this product for the matte, flawless finish. A total winner in our book.
What's your sign? No, seriously, what's your sign? It might help when picking out one of Napoleon Perdis' new Astro Girl Eye Shadow Quads. The Australian make up artist references astrology in his new collection of eye shadow quads based off the zodiac signs Fire, Earth, Air, Water. We're total astrology buffs so we couldn't resist giving this new product a chance -- fire to be exact. Even though we don't consider ourselves characteristic Leos, this 'take charge' (their words not ours) palette worked wonders. The iridescent copper, gold, pink and deep purple compliment each other very well. The firey tones blend together smoothly and boast just the right amount of shimmer.

Our penchant for eyeshadow primers aside (we're seriously addicted), Benefit Cosmetics' new
Diane Kruger was lovely in a pulled back, twisted hair style, gilded eyes, and a pale pink lip , leaving the drama to her AMAZING Chanel gown.
As usual, Kate Winslet knocked it out of the park with sleek, Veronica Lake inspired finger waves, and fresh pinks on the face to compliment her blue eyes and golden tresses.
Mo'nique decorated her coif with gardenias befitting an Oscar winner, and matched the sweet look with a flawless, matte face and glossy lips.
Elizabeth banks dazzled with bold lined eyes, a pale lip, and added a sparkly headband to her sophisticated hair style for a extra dose of glam.
Miley Cyrus brought the drama with smokey eyes, LOTS of lash, a pretty pale pout, and a gorgeous, loose wave updo that was one of our faves of the evening.
Charlize Theron's bright red lip and natural eye made a powerful statement without overpowering the actresses' knockout face.
Cameron Diaz rocked a muted version of Charlize's lip, but looked totally different and fresh. Loose, windblown waves were in tune with Cam's Cali-girl style-- effortless, pretty, and natural.
Vera Farmiga's silvery-purple eye was young and fresh, and the bold pink lip complimented her dress without competing with it, topped with a perfectly tousled a chignon.
Lastly, Jennifer Lopez ALWAYS gives good face. Perfectly groomed brows, flawless blending, and the look was balanced by her organic, loose updo.
