The glitz of last night's Academy Awards red carpet was unreal. Bright color was noticeably absent, but volume and detail were not. In the rest of the country, the recession might be prompting people to pare down and simplify, but the economy certainly didn't keep the stars from pulling out all the stops. Scroll down for our take on all the fabulous fashion.
The Battle Of The Dior Haute Couture Dresses
Marion Cotillard and
Sarah Jessica Parker both wore belted Dior Haute Couture gowns with yards and yards of tulle. Sarah Jessica called her dress "barely mint" and commented that the second
Sex and the City movie is almost a certainty. Yippee.
Obviously we loved Marion's
mermaid dress last year, but we were glad to see she didn't play it safe here either. As for Sarah Jessica, the fit of her bustier was a bit tight, but the color was very refreshing and we were glad she finally gave us Carrie-Bradshaw-glamor.
Watch Out For Marisa's Train!

Two of the most dramatic dresses of the night were worn by Marisa Tomei
(Versace) and Penelope Cruz (vintage Balmain), who picked up a Best
Supporting Actress win. We preferred Marisa's beautiful pleated dress to Penelope's wedding-dress-esque gown.
A Few Of Our Favorite Looks Of The Night

Gosh, we really, really loved Miley Cyrus! The Bolt actress totally took us by surprise on the red carpet when she showed up in a stunning layered Zuhair Murad frock. Anne Hathaway was a little safe, but completely classic looking in her slinky Armani Prive dress and Taraji Henson looked simple and chic in her tiered dress (a little bridal though like Penelope - was that a trend?) and we would have picked a different clutch.
Their Jewelry Made Their Looks...

We're not usually fans of red on the red carpet, but Amy Adams' Carolina Hererra number was an exception to the rule. The dress was truly striking and her massive bejeweled Fred Leighton necklace complemented it really well. Tim Gunn even called her a "beacon for fashion" and we agree. Remember she topped our list last year too.
And Angelina Jolie! We thought she played it really safe with her black Elie Saab dress (until we saw the slit), but she also rocked huge green emerald earrings and a cocktail ring the size of a golf ball.
We Wanted To Love But Didn't Really

Kate Winslet and Freida Pinto. Both wore dresses with asymmetrical necklines - Kate in Yves Saint Laurent and Freida in John Galliano. But we just weren't completely in love with either. By the way, besides the award for Best Actress, Kate wins our award for best beauty! Her makeup and hair were breathtakingly beautiful and her earrings were fab.
We loved the bright color of Freida's dress, but we're not huge fans of lace sleeves...especially just one of them. She might have been higher on our list then without the sleeve since we really loved the rest of the dress.
We Wanted To Love But Really Didn't

Jessica Biel and Amanda Seyfried's large bows look like something we've seen many times before. And neither one of them did a very good job of picking out shoes to go with their dresses (Jess' looked like black tennis shoes!). Although, we have to say it was kind of nice to see stars with hair that wasn't so overdone, especially Jessica's laid back locks.
