Finally, the big finale to the year’s awards season: the 84th Annual Academy Awards. We didn’t see many ballgowns on the red carpet, but what the dresses lacked in volume they made up for with beautiful fabrics and chic detailing.

LBD: Lovely Black Dresses

Tina Fey, in Carolina Herrera, Rose Byrne, in Vivienne Westwood, and Glenn Close, in (an almost-black deep green) Zac Posen showed black isn’t so basic when a peplum detail, sequins, or a smart tuxedo jacket is added.

Whites that Wow

The dresses above were the most gush worthy to us. Rooney Mara, in a Givenchy dress she says she picked earlier that morning, Mila Jovovich, in Elie Saab Couture, and Gwyneth Paltrow, in Tom Ford all exemplified simple elegance.

Gold Standard

Wendi McLendon-Covey, in an embellished strapless gown, Stacy Kiebler, in Marchesa, and Kristen Wiig, in J. Mendel all looked fabulous in nude and metallic toned dresses.

Bright Hues

oscars-2012-bright-dresses.jpgMichelle Williams, in Louis Vuitton, Maya Rudolph, in Johanna Johnson, Viola Davis in Vera Wang and Emma Stone (below) in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture all lit up the red carpet in pretty technicolor hues.

A Little Sparkle

Octavia Spencer, in Tadashi Shoji, and Jennifer Lopez, in Zuhair Murad wowed us in their sparkle plenty dresses that hugged their curves in all the right places.

Tell us: who was your favorite?

In a sea of black and white, not to mention the dreariness of winter, it’s always nice to see some celebrities take chances with color. And at the Vanity Fair and Juicy Couture “Vanities” 20th Anniversary Party this week, that’s exactly what happened! There were a veritable plethora of hues on the red carpet, making for a truly gorgeous rainbow as celebs walked along it.

Emmy-Rossum-Hayden-Panettiere-Bright-Dresses.jpgBrightly hued silk frocks
Both Emmy Rossum and Hayden Panettiere wore dresses in unbelievably bright silk. Emmy teamed her one-shoulder teal Jenny Packham frock with coral nails, while Hayden paired her red Gucci gown with the Lauren Merkin “Lucy” Clutch in bright, sunny yellow.

Paula-Patton-Jessica-Chastain-Olivia-Munn.jpgBright flowers
Paula Patton in Zac Posen, Jessica Chastain in J. Mendel and Olivia Munn in Lela Rose all went for brightly patterned florals. We love Paula’s rocker chick take with a purple leather jacket, and Olivia’s springy floral dress. Jessica’s skirt suit with ruffled jacket and peplum skirt didn’t do much for her, but we appreciate that she got in on the bright color trend of the evening.

Which look was your favorite?
salma-hayek-goya-awards.jpg Salma Hayek steals the show on the red carpet for the 26th Annual Goya Awards in Spain in a figure flattering wine gown and a beautiful necklace. We love that she chose a dress with a full skirt (balancing her curves), and kept her makeup light with slightly tousled tresses. If you ask us, she’s  totally mastered the ‘looking glamorous without trying too hard’ panache that not many stars can pull off.

JWoww-Red-Dress-Birthday-Party.jpgWe have to say, JWoww definitely takes a lot of … well … interesting chances on the red carpet. But at her 26th birthday party, she just looked absolutely stunning. JWoww chose a flowy one-shoulder dress in fiery red, a studded black cuff and simple lacquered black pumps.

We just love this look, from JWoww’s smooth and sleek tresses to her Betsey Johnson pumps. We can’t believe how grown up and sophisticated she looks!
Jennifer-Hudson-Blue-Accessories.jpgAt the premiere of Think Like A Man last week (which—side note—we can’t wait to see), the gorgeous Jennifer Hudson went for a bold look with bright blue accessories. She teamed her Gucci look with an oversized Isharya stone necklace and matching Giuseppe Zanotti suede bow pumps.

We’re really loving this look—we know it’s seen some controversy, but the contrast of the blue with the yellow in the skirt, not to mention the bright orange nails, is just so fun and youthful.
