Bestdresses2009.jpg

We just love the first part of the year, because that’s when all the major red carpet events happen (i.e. The Golden Globes, The Screen Actors Guild Awards, The Academy Awards). It’s also when the most glamorous dresses grace the red carpet. There were many great dresses this year but these were our favorites:

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive - Not only is the dress spectacular but the color and shine looked beautiful with her skin and hair. When it comes to elegance she never disappoints.

Amy Adams in Giambatista Valli - We love the deep burgundy against her skin and the way the dress clings to her shape. The extra twisted detailing in front is an added bonus.

Angelina Jolie in Elie Saab- If ever there was an example of understated elegance: this is it! We love the the low-dipping bodice and the beautiful draping. Angelina took the look one step further with amazing emerald drop earrings.

Taraji P. Henson in Roberto Cavalli - Taraji may not have taken home the golden man this night, but as far as fashion goes she was definitely a winner. The beautifully tiered dress fit like a dream and had a beautiful train that demanded attention.

We can’t wait to see next year’s looks.

Matte Lips - Glossy lips took a backseat to matte lips this year. Stars like Charlize Theron tried on this subtle hue for the red carpet.

Novelty Nails - Nail polish color got a kick this year with hues like jade and gray. Stars like Drew Barrymore and Rachel Bilson were among some of the stars who loved this look. We especially love Chanel’s Le Vernis Nail Color in Jade, which helped launch the trend.

Hair Transformations - 2009hairchangesbefore.jpg 2009hairchangesafter.jpg

One beauty trend we never tire of is seeing stars play with their hair’s cut and color. Above are some of our favorite hair transformations of 2009.

These are the accessories that accented our favorite looks this year.

1. Bib Necklace - These statement necklaces were big this year on an off the red carpet. Here Olivia Palermo wears her bib necklace over a gray fringe dress.

2. Studded Bags - Whether placed all over or underneath the bottom (as shown here on Kristin Cavallari’s Alexander Wang Coco Duffel Bag), studs on handbags made a big splash this year in Hollywood. The studs are a great twist to classic styles and definitely keep things interesting.

3. Tolani Scarfs - These chic scarfs are a Hollywood favorite, and definitely a piece that is fun and functional. With a myriad of styles, Tolani scarfs appeal to many starlets with varying styles.

4. Cuffs - Today’s leading ladies and stars graced the red carpet sporting bigger bolder statement jewelry in the form of decorative cuffs. Dainty bangles were switched out for dramatic cuffs in pretty enamel colors and rich gold.

There were many trends we saw this year, but these are the trends that were fresh and have staying power.

1. The Boyfriend Blazer - Seen on and off the red carpet, the boyfriend blazer was a Hollywood staple this year. Adding a casual touch to cocktail dresses, and a sophistication to t-shirts and jeans, this is a must-have piece for most starlets.

2. Color - Stars were no shrinking violets this year as we saw a range of candy colored hues on the red carpet.Cobalt, as seen here on Charlize Theron, was especially popular and is one color that never goes out of style.

3. Over -the-Knee Boots - We’ve seen the knee high boot, and we’ve seen the bootie, but not since the sixties has there been such an interest in over-the-knee boots. Worn with short dresses as well over skinny jeans, these boots got some serious mileage from today’s hottest celebs.

4. Formal Shorts - We love a great dress on the red carpet, but we found it refreshing to see a spin on red carpet dressing with stars wearing the formal short. The shorts, usually made out of silk or satin, have a nice sheen and made the gams on the ladies who wore them look a mile long.

Blake Lively, Ashley Greene, and Rachel McAdams lit up the red carpet for the New York premiere of Sherlock Holmes in great looks in black and white. We love the flirty cocktail dresses Blake and Ashley wore, but we’re especially smitten with Rachel’s Jasmine di Milo black bustier and Catherine Malandrino wide-leg trousers.
