Finally, a ritzy red carpet event. Knowing there’s a possibility the Oscar red carpet may not happen because of the writers strike, we were particularly interested in what the stars wore last night. We weren’t disappointed.

The Best of the Best
Ashley Tisdale America Fererra Ugly Betty Holly Hunter Marion Cotillard Eva Longoria Parker

Most everyone looked radiant on the red carpet, but the dresses and stars that stuck out most in our mind kept it simple in colors like white, light gray, dark gray and champagne. We really loved Ashley Tisdale (although we’re not quite sure why she was attending) and our favorite was America Fererra of Ugly Betty (notice in the background behind America you can see Holly Hunter…she looked great as well, but a bit like she was getting married). Marion Cotillard’s gown was very simple, but fit her very well and Eva Longoria Parker’s dress was almost ikat-like in its print, but the tone-on-tone color palette kept it very glamorous, but a bit understated and we really liked it.

They Took a Risk…..Did It Pay Off?

Kate Beckinsale Sandra Oh Angelina Jolie Edie Falco

We also liked Kate Beckinsale (even though she looked like Belle from Beauty and the Beast) and Sandra Oh’s giant bow gown in a gorgeous chocolate brown was definitely a risk, but still chic. Angelina Jolie looked beautiful and sophisticated, but her dress did absolutely nothing to squash the pregnancy rumors that are beginning to surface. In fact…we think it’s going to intensify the rumors. Edie Falco (one of the night’s winners) was also a risk-taker, wearing a very basic sheath, but she didn’t do the outfit any favors by pairing such a simple dress with such a boring shoe.

Trendspotting: Short and Sweet

Michelle Pfeiffer and Sophia Bush both opted for strapless brown dresses with short hems and peep toe heels and Ellen Page wore basic black….again (if she wears black to the Oscars, she’s going straight to our worst-dressed list).

Kyra Sedgwick, Vanessa Williams, Marcia Cross and Sara Ramirez wore neon and looked fab.

What Were They Thinking?
Jane Krakowski Tilda Swinton Dana Delaney

All in all, it was a great night for fashion on the red carpet. But no red carpet is without several serious errors in judgment. We have to wonder what Jane Krakowski, Tilda Swinton and Dana Delaney (or their stylists) were thinking.

Miley Cyrus Hannah Montana Ashley Tisdale

The tween stars were all glammed up at the Hollywood premiere of Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour” 3-D Concert.

The film’s star, Miley Cyrus unveiled a new raven-locked look and Ashley Tisdale took her new nose out for a spin as well (she’s been open about her recent surgery to correct a deviated septum).

So, who looked better? Personally, we’d call it a tie. They both look really sweet, young and stylish. But, at 15 years old, Miley’s ensemble might be a bit sophisticated for her young age.

We know what you’re thinking. “Why would I want to look like a guy?” But it’s Johnny Depp!

Johnny Depp Sweeney Todd

When we saw this photo of Depp at the Paris premiere of Sweeney Todd, we wondered if we could somehow “feminize” his signature grungy, bohemian style into an acceptable outfit. Luckily, longer jackets are coming back in and a layered wrap is always chic. We think this look is perfect for a trip to the movies, or the park or even a airplane ride.

Despite the canceled Golden Globes, the stars have had plenty of recent opportunities to get red-carpet ready. Case in point: the Chanel Fine Jewelry - Night of Diamonds at the Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Kate Mara Selma Blair Blake Lively Margherita Missoni Chanel

Although none of these stars would probably have attended the Globes, they were our favorites of the night by far. From left to right, Kate Mara, Selma Blair, Blake Lively and (our style muse!), Margherita Missoni. The daughter of Italian designers, Margherita always looks impeccable.

Selma and Blake’s dresses are actually somewhat similar with the embellishments on the bodice and the silver brooches at the waist. We prefer Selmas take. The fit of Blake’s dress seems to be a bit off and, combined with her kind of messy hair, she looks a bit like someone playing dress up

Katie Holmes Mad Money

Katie Holmes sure knows how to pick a fabulous coat. We loved this trench coat she wore before and we love these two coats she was spotted in recently. Get the look of the Mad Money star’s orange/red coat at bananarepublic.com.
