Naomi Watts

Naomi Watts wore her best carpet bag dress last week to the opening gala for the BFI London Film Festival. This outfit just doesn’t look good. The ankle booties might have looked smart in black and the dress could have worked with a simple pump, but together they’re just confusing.

Penelope Cruz Rachel Bilson Jennifer Connolly Kate Bosworth Jennifer Garner

All the elegance of a dress with the casual quality of sticking your hands in your pockets: dresses with pockets are the best of both worlds and a definite trend among the stars.

Once a fun feature on full skirts, you can find dresses with pockets now in all different silhouettes and lengths. Penelope Cruz, Rachel Bilson, Jennifer Connolly, Kate Bosworth and Jennifer Garner all sported this style in recent weeks. Check out these pocket dresses at shopbop.com, anthropologie.com and urbanoutfitters.com.

Katie Holmes

Katie Holmes recently wore a voluminous trench coat in Paris and we loved it! We can’t tell if it is a trench coat dress or just a very full coat, but it looks so comfortable. For all we know, Kate could have a sweatshirt and a pair of boxer shorts on under her trench. We’re fairly confident that she doesn’t, but the point is that a great outfit doesn’t have to be complicated. Steal Kate’s polished look with just two pieces.

Lily Allen

Lily Allen usually steps out in a feminine ’50s style frock with loose-fitting sneakers and while it was always a major fashion don’t, it did make her stand out in a crowd. Now she’s turning heads for a more fashionable reason…a pretty, feminine and sleek new look with simple hair and a statement-making red lip.

Lily looked lovely at the Swarovski Fashion Rocks after party in London last week. Love Lily’s navy T-straps with jewel embellishment? Get your own pair on sale at ninewest.com!

Claire Danes

There’s really only one problem with the gray dress Claire Danes wore to the 67th Annual Motion Picture Club Awards and Installation Luncheon in New York City: the proportion of the sleeves.

Imagine if they were shorter and did not come down to the same level as the waistband….the dress would have really worked. As it is, she looks too top heavy.

She might have saved the look if she had paired the dress with a more substantial shoe. Instead, her barely-there sandal pump makes it looks like a huge dress on a tiny person. It’s too bad, the ombre coloration of the dress (a gradual change from one color to another) is beautifully restrained.
