Boy meets girl: menswear-inspired looks for fall

by Stacy Cox

Floral with tweed? Mixing Prints? Thick knits paired with something body hugging…can it be done? Should it be done? It CAN and creates a boy-meets-girl, all-American look that’s become an unexpected fashion statement this season. When you think “tomboy” it conjures up images from childhood of skinned knees, hand-me-downs and spending endless hours on the jungle gym. But leave it to designers to re-imagine the tomboy perception into something surprisingly wearable, unique and very charming. Think girly pants paired with a totally non matching, oversized tweedy sweater and cute wedge shoes. Multi print layers with similar scale patterns in contrasting textures are a great mash-up on top and then break all the rules and choose something unpredictable on bottom.

Take a peek to see the tomboy look turned into something thoroughly modern and unexpectedly sophisticated.

Printed trousers are a great “anchor” to layer the Equipment blouse and Jewel Bow Tie Broach Top. Wedge loafers, a briefcase bag, and earrings add polish to the look and offer up a “wow factor.” Who wants to be a tomboy now?

Fresh as a daisy! I love that designers are paying no attention to the seasons and allowing spring-inspired designs like this D&G meadow green floral skirt to make an unexpected appearance in stores. A boxy tee and boyfriend cardigan will balance the feminine flair of the skirt. The printed wool coat is one of those elements that you can mix with lots of things in your closet and basically amortize the cost (and justify it).
