Golden Globes red carpet trend on a budget: graphic black and white looks

There were several trends popping on the red carpet at Sunday’s Golden Globe awards, but one of our favorites that seemed to be everywhere is the supremely wearable black and white trend.  Worn by Allison Williams (in Alexander McQueen), Jennifer Lawrence (in her polarizing, meme-inspiring Dior) and Hayden Panettiere (in her off-the-rack Tom Ford), amongst others, the look is classic and striking against the red carpet.

Not just a red carpet trend, black and white is poised to be one of the top trends for Spring 2014 as well, making it the perfect time to add some black and white pieces to your wardrobe. Since I don’t have much use for evening gowns, I went on a hunt to find some amazing pieces in this timeless color scheme that I can incorporate into my everyday look — on a budget, of course.

Printed tunic, $88; Striped jacket, $39.95 (sale); Woven moto jacket, $99.95 (sale), all from Anthropologie

My first stop was Anthropologie, where I found some gorgeous black and white pieces on the rack and in the sale department. I tried on several, including the three pieces above and a great pair of pointed-toe flats. The flats fit perfectly and were promptly scooped up.

I also went to Loft where I found several more black and white pieces at great prices — plus, they were having a 40% off sale, which you can’t beat. I left Loft with several amazing pieces included a striped dress, a dotted blouse (below) and a black and white animal print sleeveless blouse.

All in all, I would say I did really well! I ended up with four black and white pieces, all bought on sale or with a discount, that I can incorporate into my wardrobe now and as the weather warms. The best part about the black and white “trend” is that it’s hardly a trend at all and looks chic year after year.

With award season just beginning, I can’t wait to see which other trends hit the red carpet over the next couple of months…
