Our love affair with plaid usually reaches a high point during fall and winter, but tartan patterns have some real staying power. There are a ton of new ways to wear plaid and celebs have definitely gotten into the act by favoring sophisticated silhouettes on the red carpet. Diane Kruger embraced the popular pattern back in August at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s 2013 Installation Luncheon. Her strapless Carven Resort 2014 draped dress was capped off by Stuart Weitzman‘s ankle strap Nudist sandals. The following month during London Fashion Week, Vivienne Westwood‘s Red Label presentation saw several stars outfitted in plaid in the front row. Singer Paloma Faith went with a tailored green and blue suit styled with a gold pair of platform pumps. Anna Kendrick was also in the audience and the actress made her own tartan statement in a colorful skirt by Vivienne Westwood. She wrapped up the look with a white blouse and pumps as well as a purple jacket.

With all these sleeker versions of the staple fabric now available, it’s a great time to start experimenting. Take some inspiration from the modern twist stars are placing on plaid and incorporate a piece or two into your wardrobe.
