New York Fashion Week coverage provided by The Fashion Spot
It may be the middle of winter, but New York is already buzzing about what’s hot for Fall 2012 with NY Fashion Week in full swing at Lincoln Center. Here are highlights from some of yesterday’s best shows:
You know that happy feeling you get around the holidays? Michael Kors’ Fall 2012 with its cozy blanket coats, floor length sequins, and notes of bright red left one with that same fuzzy feeling. Even those averse to plaid will have a tough time denying the winter appeal of his fringed blanket coats. A parade of plaid aside, fur was a big statement making point this season with the designer nodding to some of last season’s safari moments, notably via neutral-toned long vests, rugged belted coats, and an imposing (in a good way) tasseled cape. Boots and handbags were similarly adorned with conspicuous touches of fur.

MARC BY MARC JACOBS
It was schoolgirl chic for this season’s Marc by Marc Jacobs collection — complete with some models wearing stereotypically erudite thick rimmed glasses. Prim and proper below-the-knee day and cocktail dresses with fitted waists, pleated skirts with conservative hems, longsleeve print sweaters, and button down monochrome blouses made for wearable looks that will likely appeal to women from schoolgirl age to well beyond.

Though we’ve been seeing some white on the runway, most collections have veered towards the dark side, so it was a refreshing burst of energy to see J. Crew’s Fall 2012 collection with its vibrant color palette. Key looks mixed glam touches like floor length pleated skirts with fitted cable knit sweaters, which resulted in a collection that had wide-range appeal. Looking for a simple striped top? Done. Sequins galore? They’ve got it, along with trousers in a slew of patterns, menswear-inspired blazers, tailored outerwear, structured bags in a variety of sizes, and shoes, which will be sold online, designed in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik.

Burch’s Fall 2012 collection was inspired by the good girl who falls for the bad guy. How does such a woman dress? True to her polished style, she opts for prim, but fitted silhouettes (think below-the-knee dresses and skirts) and proper detailings (think bows, rosettes, embellished collars) mixed alongside more daring ones (think lace, gold metallic, tightly belted waists).
