The Best Fashion and Beauty Trends of 2009

The StyleBakery editors share their picks for the best trends of 2009.

Denim leggings are by far my favorite trend for 2009. Paired with a cozy sweater and tall boots, they’re a great look that almost anyone can pull off (you have to try it to believe me!) Plus, you don’t have to worry about the baggy knees you often get when tucking skinny jeans into boots. Motorcycle jackets paired with dresses and skirts was also a favorite trend, as were big, chunky necklaces which can elevate even the most basic outfit. In beauty, I love the return of the red lip – so classic and elegant.”

– Jennifer Davidson, cofounder and style director

“For me, it’s a toss up between leggings and blazers. I have been a fan of leggings for a while since they are so easy to wear with a great pair of boots, and with the right proportion top, you can really look pulled together. I was really happy when the jegging or jean legging came out – combining the best of both worlds. I am also loving the boyfriend blazer – it is an easy, relaxed look that is fun to incorporate into your wardrobe. For beauty, I love the emphases this past year on big lashes and all the fun products that came out to make them look bigger and bolder. If you go out with no makeup, a touch of mascara does the trick. I also love the braided hairstyles that we saw all summer and even on the red carpets.”

– Beth Herbst, cofounder and style director

Military and majorette-inspired jackets and blazers were my favorite fashion trends of 2009. Michael Jackson, Rhianna and Beyonce initially reignited the trend with the Balmain version, mine is the more affordable Alice + Olivia one, but I always get compliments every time I take it out of the closet for a spin.”

– Stacy Cox, TV expert and style contributor

“The best beauty/fashion trend of 2009 was color in everything– not just in clothing and accessories, but in makeup and nail polish, too. I love that bright colors are still on trend for the fall/winter season.”

– Monique Hankins, beauty editor

“My favorite fashion trend of 2009 was sequins because they are so glamorous and fun. Nothing says I’m ready to have the time of my life than a sequined mini dress!”

– Anna Rice, fashion and beauty editor

“The best fashion trend of 2009 was definitely the boyfriend blazer. It’s the one piece, structured or not, that can instantly pull a look together.”

– Stephany McKnight, celebrity style editor

“Balmain’s rock glam inspiration and boyfriend dressing were my two favorite trends. Oversized blazers, tough shoulders and thigh high boots inspired me to add runway touches to my everyday outfits. I’m borderline between the two – both trends topped my dressing choices all year long.”

– Ishra Sharif, gossip editor

“Maybe it’s the inner ’80s child in me, but my love for sequins was affirmed this year. I love how easily it integrates into my wardrobe: demurely detailed on a blazer for an understated approach or boldly fashion forward on an evening dress.”

– Tanya Sharma, Daily Scoop and Tempting Treat editor

“My favorite fashion trend of 2009 was exposed zippers. My favorite zipper look started at Balmain in 2008 and really spread like wildfire through mainstream fashion in 2009 – asymmetrical, placed where they don’t seem to belong but for some reason totally work.”

– Andrea Thatcher, celebrity style editor

“By FAR the absolute most divine, delectable, true fashion pleaser had to be the Fanciful Headband.  Feathers and lace and marabou and satin and bows have never sat so high on the fashion must-have list.  And who doesn’t love an effortless chic way to turn a bad hair day into a wow day.”
