Easy holiday party DIY ideas: What to serve, drink and more

Tired of the same old party plans? Get creative this year with our easy DIY ideas for decorating, food and cocktails.

A festive and simple way to decorate is to fill glass or crystal bowls with silvery ornaments and place around the room on shelves and tables. Fill in with votive candles for a warm glow.

There’s nothing worse than spending the entire party in the kitchen while your guests have all the fun. Choose finger foods that can be prepared in advance and served room temperature so guests can graze throughout the party while you relax and enjoy yourself. I like to create a variety of hearty platters for guests to nibble on:

  • Cheese platter – Choose several varieties of cheese and serve with crackers and sliced baguettes. Platter with grapes, strawberries, spiced nuts and hard salami or chorizo.
  • Crudite – Include a variety of crunchy vegetables and delicious spinach or artichoke dip.
  • Shrimp platter – Always a crowd favorite, a chilled shrimp cocktail platter is readily available at most grocery stores (and Costco!).
  • Tortilla chips – Served with guacamole and salsa. Include multicolored tortilla chips for a pretty presentation.

In addition to wine, beer and soda, I like to serve a specialty cocktail for every party. This year, I’m making it easy on myself by serving Sauza Sparkling Margarita in Wild Berry flavor. It’s ready to serve and made with real tequila in a bubbly format, offering a refreshing alternative to champagne. Serve in a champagne flute garnished with raspberries or pomegranate and a sprig of mint — delicious!

When it comes to dessert, I usually take the simple route and serve a variety of fresh fruit, mini cupcakes and cookies. Another favorite is to serve chocolate fondue alongside a platter of dippable foods, including strawberries, marshmallows, shortbread cookies, graham crackers and pound cake.

Set up a corner of the room as a holiday-themed photo booth for instant fun and memories. Hang festive wrapping paper for the background and include a variety of silly props. Guests can use their smartphones to take pictures of each other or designate a house photographer to take photos.

Forgo the classic holiday music and seek out rock or lounge versions of holiday favorites instead. Create a playlist that mixes in the holiday music with non-holiday favorites.

Party Favor:

Send everyone home with a USB stick filled with your favorite music from your party playlist.
