How to cultivate your signature style

Gossip Girl‘s Blair Waldorf had her headbands. Anna Wintour has her blunt cut bangs. Gwen Stefani has her red lip. Jessica Alba has her ever-present collection of draped scarves. Jackie Onassis had her oversized sunglasses. Rachel Zoe has her 70s boho/glam vibe. What all these women have in common is that they have a signature look that works for them, and they stick with it. It takes more than a designer budget, access to the latest trends or a model-size figure to have great style, the key is to know yourself.

Of course, wearing the same thing day in and day out may soon turn from signature to boring or predictable. You don’t want to be stuck in a rut, so evolving your signature look is essential. Personally, my signature style has a few constants. For one, I tend to gravitate towards prints; whether it’s a printed dress or a printed top worn with more basic, monochrome items, I always like to have one piece that pops. My signature style also changes with the season. In the summer, my go-to is a dress (printed, natch) and sandals, while in the winter, I’m almost always in a wrap sweater or long cardigan worn with jeans and boots. I do change it up on occasion, but I’ll admit, I definitely have a “look.” That’s not to say that I don’t find often find myself in a rut, but it’s nothing that can’t be solved with a new printed piece to mix in with my wardrobe!

If you haven’t yet discovered your signature style, don’t worry, it’s never too late to find it! You may even have one already without knowing it. (Have you ever had a friend pick something out and say it was so you?) Start by figuring out what makes you special and learn how to use your style to express your best qualities. Have expressive eyes? Experiment with makeup looks that draw attention to them. Have amazing toned arms? Sleeveless dresses may be your thing. Have a vibrant personality? Perhaps bright colors or a funky shoe are for you. You’re a free spirit? Try out a relaxed boho look or quirky retro-inspired pieces. Experiment with what you like, what looks great on you and develop it until your signature style emerges.
