Next time you get a manicure or DIY, skip the glossy lacquer and bright colors. Matte nail polish in deep and neutral tones is all the rage this fall, and we’ve picked the hottest colors (plus a way to get the look on a budget).
launched their capsule collection of matte nail polishes this spring. The chic colors and flat finish have made their polishes best sellers. They cost about $20 each and can be purchased through Henri Bendel’s concierge
. Our favorites are Karen
(bright red) and Ox
(a combination of purple and brown). If you still love your old nail polish color, KnockOut has a Flatte top coat
that can matte-ify it. The top coat can also be used to protect your nail color and make it last. Your polish should last 7 to 10 days before it chips!
also has a few matte nail polishes that don’t last as long as KnockOut’s, but they are less expensive and easier to find in stores. Our favorite colors are Gargantuan Green Grape
and Russian Navy
. They are both available on Amazon.com
If you prefer a little shimmer on your nails, try Zoya’s Matte Velvet collection which also launched this spring. While these polishes chip pretty easily, they cost less than OPI or KnockOut (they retail for $6 each on Zoya.com) and dry in seconds. Our favorite colors are Loredana and Posh.
Ready to try matte nail color? Here are a few application tips:
- Don’t apply a base coat unless you are willing to wait until it is completely dry before applying polish. If you apply it right away, it will cause ridges.
- Avoid hand lotion, swimming, or anything else that might cause your nails to chip, since matte polishes don’t last as long as glossy colors.
- Apply quickly since this polish dries super fast. It’s thickness can make mistakes noticeable, so keep a nail polish removing pen close by.
- If you want to convert your old glossy polishes to matte, do so with the Essie Matte About You Matte Finisher ($8.50 on Amazon.com). Within seconds, your color will be matte!
